Jefferson city clerk Diane Kennedy reported to the city council that 58 residents dropped off a total of 2,519 pounds of hazardous material during the Aug. 16 collection at the Greene County Fairgrounds. That averaged to 43.42 pounds per vehicle.
The Metro Park West Commission provided the following weights per category: lead-acid batteries, 495 lbs; oil based paint, 409; used oil, 384; paint related items, 291; pesticides, 250; antifreeze, 189; fuels, 117; aerosols, 113; florescent lights 4 inches and longer, 105; bases, 75; rechargeable batteries, 46; acids, 28; florescent lights shorter than 4 inches, 12; small oil filters, 4; U-shaped florescent lights, 2; and sharps, 1.
Lead-acid batteries and oil based paint together made up nearly 36 percent of the material by weight.
“As long as we’ve done this, you’d think people would run out of things to bring, but it just keeps coming and coming,” Jefferson city administrator Mike Palmer said.
